The Role of Concentrated Solar Power and Thermal Energy Storage in Sustainable Power Solutions

The increasing global demand for renewable energy is driven by its low operational costs and broad access to diverse power systems. Solar energy, in particular, has emerged as the fastest-growing renewable source and is projected to surpass hydropower by 2030. Solar technologies such as photovoltaic (PV) panels and concentrated solar power (CSP) systems are at the forefront of this transformation. Among them, CSP stands out due to its capacity for thermal energy storage (TES), enabling electricity generation during non-sunny periods. Central receivers in CSP plants allow for higher solar concentration and improved efficiency over line-focal systems like parabolic troughs. This is achieved through better heat transfer, from solar radiation to thermal and then to electrical energy. The development of CSP with TES not only enhances energy conversion efficiency but also supports stable and reliable energy generation, positioning CSP as a critical component in future renewable energy infrastructures.
